eTA Canada general information
The eTA Canada (Electronic Travel Authorization) is an online visa for visa-exempt foreign nationals for travel to Canada. The Canadian eTA enables its holders to transit through Canadian airports or fly to Canada for vacationing and business handling.
The Canadian authorities introduced electronic travel authorization in 2016 to simplify traveling for eligible citizens and make the application process faster. Recently, in June 2023, 13 countries, including Thailand, started to participate in the Electronic Visa Program as well.
While a valid passport is required for all nationalities, citizens of newly participating member countries must have either a Canada visa held at any point within the 10 years or a current US non-immigrant visa. Thai nationals must get one of these documents in order to be able to apply for an eTA Canada.
The application process for Thai citizens involves completing an online form, uploading documents, and covering the service fees. The eTA to Canada is delivered to the email address an applicant provided in the form.
The Canadian eTA allows to enter Canada an unlimited amount of times during the validity period, with each visit not exceeding 6 months (180 days). The eTA Canada stays valid for 5 years or until the traveler's passport expires - whichever comes first.
Thai passport holders must check the entry rules enforced by the government of Canada and satisfy the requirements for eTA Canada to ensure a trip without issues.

Who needs an eTA Canada?
The eTA Canada is mandatory for eligible foreign nationals to travel to Canada by air:

Citizens of countries marked with ''*", with Thailand among them, can apply for eTA Canada, provided they have a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visitor visa within the previous 10 years.
The eTA to Canada is not required for the following citizens:
- Canadian citizens or dual Canadian citizens
- Permanent residents of Canada
- US citizens

The Canada electronic travel authorization is easy to obtain: it has an entirely online and uncomplicated application procedure. To apply for an eTA to Canada, one needs to prepare a working device, required documents, and start the process with the 'Apply Online' button:

Necessary documents for an eTA Canada
All eligible foreign travelers planning to visit Canada short-term, regardless of their travel purpose (whether it is for leisure, business, or transit), must hold a valid passport that does not expire within 6 months from arrival.
In addition, citizens of countries that are visa-exempt for Electronic Travel Authorization in June 2023, must have one of the following documents:
- a valid US non-immigrant visa
- a visitor visa to Canada issued within the last 10 years
Note: A Canadian eTA is linked to the passport a visitor used to apply. If the passport expires, a new eTA Canada is required.
